Swearing-In Ceremony for the Deputy Ombudsman Ms. KANZAYIRE Bernadette

After being appointed by the Cabinet on 29th January 2010 and confirmed by the Senate, Ms. KANZAYIRE Bernadette was sworn to by His Excellence the President of the Republic to fill the position of the Deputy Ombudsman in charge of preventing injustice and corruption.

According to the Law N°.17/2005 of 18 th August 2005 amending and supplementing Law N°25/2003 of 15 August 2003 on the organization and functioning of the Office of the Ombudsman as it is stipulated in the article 1 that the mandate of the Ombudsman is four years and the that of the Deputy Ombudsman is three years. These terms are renewable only once.

The Deputy Ombudsman are particularly responsible for:

1. To prepare training sessions for the population so that they may develop the culture of participating in good governance;

2° To prepare seminars for government employees and staff in public and private institutions, in non governmental organizations so that they can improve their conduct and working methods;

3° To set up all possible means of preventing and eradicating injustice, corruption and other related offences;

4° To examine petitions related to injustice, corruption and other related crimes and to submit to the Office what is required to be done so that such petitions receive appropriate solutions;

5° To make a follow up on the faithful declaration of assets of persons mentioned in Article 3-4° of this law.

In his remarks at the swearing of Deputy Ombudsman Ms KANZAYIRE Bernadette and two Members of Parliament HAMIDU Omar and GAHONDOGO Athanasie, His Excellence the President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul KAGAME told them that they have a big task to promote transparency and accountability. The authorities must fulfill their obligations in the interests of Rwandans in general.
