THE OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN VISITED KIGALI CITY

On Wednesday 14 th March 2012, the authorities and the staff of the Office of the Ombudsman visited Kigali City in order to know how far is the implementation of the master plan as well as how the Kigali City process with the expropriation because it is one of the complaints that the Office of the Ombudsman receive.

“We want to know where our city has reached in the development” stated the deputy Ombudsman in charge of preventing and fighting injustice, Kanzayire Bernadette.

The vice mayor in charge of finance and economic Mr. Alphonse Nizeyimana thanked the Office of the Ombudsman for the visit and he explained that Kigali City has 730 km 2 and 1 million of habitants.

“You can’t say a town without a vision, that is why there is master plan of our town which shows where we want to be in next 10 years, we have a general master plan but now we are doing a district master plan so far Nyarugenge master plan is completed .”

“Our city is 730km 2 but only 50% is buildable that is why Kigali citizens are called to build on small space” he added.

The vice mayor also said that they have a day per week where they receive complainants to the Kigali City Council.

In his closing remarks, the acting chief Ombudsman, Mr. Nzindukiyimana Augustin acknowledged the good cooperation between the Office of the Ombudsman and Kigali City Council and thanked Kigali City Council a warm welcome.

After a brief overview of the functioning and responsibilities of Kigali City Council. The vice mayor took the staff of the Office of the Ombudsman on a tour to see how far the master plan is being implemented. The tour started to the new building of Rwanda Social Security Board till to Gacuriro Estate.
