Today, Tuesday December 6, 2022, the Office of the Ombudsman organized a consultative meeting on the measures to prevent and fight corruption in financial services will. In her Opening remarks, The Chief Ombudsman Nirere Madeleine said that the meeting was organized in order to improve the service delivery in financial Institutions so that the beneficiary receives a better, faster and more transparent service.
She said “Financial Institutions are important partners of the country in its development in determining the use of money through taxes,loans given to people and supporting the country in reducing unemployment; they provide jobs when all this is done in transparency”.

To date, corruption in financial services has been identified by various studies. The Baseline study on the status of corruption in Rwanda conducted by the Office of the Ombudsman in 2020 showed that banks are still corrupt.

Rwanda has put in place various measures and strategies to prevent and fight corruption: the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1: 2017-2024) which foresees that in 2024, the Anti-corruption rate is expected to shift from 86.56% (RGS 2016) to 92.56% by 2024 while in its vision of 2050, Rwanda should be the first country globally in the fight against corruption.
