The Office of the Ombudsman presented to the Parliament both Chambers (Deputies and Senate) the Annual report 2020-2021 and its Action Plan 2021-2022

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, the Office of the Ombudsman presented to the Parliament both Chambers (Deputies and Senate) the Annual report 2020-2021 and its Action Plan 2021-2022.

The report points out that the Office of the Ombudsman has fulfilled its responsibilities of preventing and fighting against injustice and corruption, to advising public and private sectors to improve their performance; receiving and verifying the Assets declared by persons as provided by the law; receiving the assets declaration of political parties, monitoring compliance with the organic law governing the leadership code of conduct and the access to information law and so on.

Honorable Chief Ombudsman, Madam Nirere Madeleine, told MPs and Senators that, despite the constraints exerted by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's planned activities were carried out.

The Chief Ombudsman also said that the Office of the Ombudsman received 852 cases of injustice, 635 cases were resolved, 199 cases were referred to the relevant authorities for resolutions and 18 had not been worked on.

As for the cases related to court judgment review on the grounds of injustice, the Chief Ombudsman told to the Legislature that out of 361 files, 343 were analyzed (95%), while 18 (5%) were not yet treated.

In fighting corruption, the Office of the Ombudsman conducted analysis and investigation of 45 suspected corruption cases in collaboration with other agencies and all were concluded except 5 that are still ongoing.

For the declaration of Assets:

 13,276 (99.7%) out of 13,313 made their declarations;

  • 37 (0.3%) did not declare.
  • 1,754, were verified.
  • 3 cases of those who have not been able to clearly explain the origin of the property have been handed over to RIB, the other 3 cases are still under analysis.

After raising concerns and questions, members of Parliament commended and approved the Annual Report of the Office of the Ombudsman 2020-2021 and the Action Plan for 2021-2022.

The Office of the Ombudsman is committed to continuing the campaign of prevention and fight against injustice and corruption and instilling the values of resisting, preventing, avoiding and fighting injustice and corruption among the Rwandan Community.
