Nyagatare: Ombudsman heard citizens's problems including damage caused by the tarmac road building and demolished houses caused by dynamites.

Residents of Nyagatare District have approached the Ombudsman, Nirere Madeleine, filling their cases about the lack of compensation for the Nyagatare-Rukomo tarmac road, the property damage cases by dynamites and the lack of land property documents.

These issues were raised by the residents of Nyagatare District during a preventing and combating injustice and corruption campaign from 24 to 28 May 2021 in Nyagatare, Mimuli and Rwimiyaga Sectors.

Among the issues brought to the attention of the Ombudsman got immediate response while others were submitted to the local authorities’ team to investigate more and report to the Office of the Ombudsman.

Residents say they have not received any compensation for their property, which was counted three years ago and others have told the Ombudsman that their houses are being demolished by dynamites used for digging the excavation site of the Nyagatere-Rukomo road.

Nine residents who had been claiming for their money for more than two years were asked to bring their Bank Account numbers for the payment after they reported the matter to the Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman, Nirere Madeleine, said many of the received cases including compensation cases were answered and some of them are going to get a deposit soon on their bank accounts. Another big issue was the houses that are being demolished by dynamites used during road building. These people need to be paid or their houses to be repaired through the mediation between the citizens and the building company.

"We have asked the authorities to go into the matter and look at the entrepreneur and the people, and we have set up a team of district and sector leaders so we will follow up and see if it is resolved as we have agreed," the ombudsman said.

The campaign is funded by the European Union and is being carried out by the Office of the Ombudsman in Nyagatare District, where visitors to health centers were provided with equipments including umbrellas and t-shirts carrying anti-corruption and anti-injustice messages.
